Recap of Day 1 and Preview of Day 2: Boo vs. Sean O’Hair

Day 1 of the Accenture Match Play Championship didn’t go unnoticed especially with the return of Tiger Woods to the PGA Tour. Here is a recap of Boo’s day:

When American Boo Weekley closed out Englishman Justin Rose on the 18th hole of their match, it prevented the English contingent from having a perfect first round. English golfers went 6-1 on the day and Americans went 12-5, the two best marks for any country with more than one golfer entered. Those two countries now comprise more than half the second round contestants. Australians went a dismal 2-6 and South Africa went 3-5. Denmark saw all three of its entrants lose, the most golfers entered with none winning on the day.

Of course, the one guy we expected to win did (Tiger). The question is — after a night of icing and elevating that knee, how strong will it be for the second day of mountain climbing?
The biggest complaint of the week remains the same for most of the guys out here: The greens are way too slow. Even Woods said as much after his win.
Well, I got bad news for you boys. Even with a perfect weather forecast for the rest of the week, they cannot make them any faster. Even as big as these greens are, the humps and bumps in them prevent rules officials from making them quick.
What to look for in Day 2? I look for a great match between Rory McIlroy and Hunter Mahan. When’s the last time Hunter was the old man in the group?
Also, I am looking forward to Boo Weekley against Sean O’Hair. I just like the North (O’Hair lives outside of Philadelphia) vs. South thing there.

PREVIEW DAY 2

Gary Player Bracket

MOST INTRIGUING MATCH: Sean O’Hair vs. Boo Weekley. You never know what you’re going to get from Weekley — on or off the course. That said, he’s turning out to be a pretty impressive force in match play situations. O’Hair, meanwhile, was red hot on Wednesday and can be streaky good.

MOST COMPETITIVE MATCH: Sean O’Hair vs. Boo Weekley. Both these guys were as hot as the Arizona weather on Wednesday. A dozen birdies between them ought to make for a pretty good showdown. Of all the matches in this bracket, this one’s also got the potential to have the loudest gallery.

POTENTIAL BLOWOUT MATCH: Ian Poulter vs. Charl Schwartzel. We though Schwartzel would possibly get blown out by Sergio Garcia and saw how that one turned out. Poulter is a player, however, who, when he’s playing well, tends to do so in streaks. Given how Poulter played Wednesday, this one might have blowout written all over it.

POTENTIAL SECOND-ROUND MATCH: Ian Poulter vs. Boo Weekley. I can see it now…Poulter in hot pink pants and Weekley riding the bull down the fairway. This would have some serious entertainment value to it, not to mention some pretty darned good golf. Both these guys are making birdies in bunches right now.

Twenty-two golf shirts. Seventeen pairs of pants. A pile of stuff, really, that Boo Weekley insists he’d fit into one bag.

Needing new shafts on a few clubs, he throws an extra 4-iron, 5-iron and hybrid in his bag. Tees, gloves and shoes were at the ready in the garage.
